Southern Forests Trout Festival 2025

Southern Forests Trout Festival 2025

Troutfest is back and better than ever for 2025! Join us for a fun, family-friendly celebration of freshwater fishing in the beautiful Southern Forests region.

Thanks to Recfishwest, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), the Shire of Manjimup, and the Southern Forests Freshwater Angling Club, 65,300 trout are being released across WA’s South-West this spring — and Big Brook Dam is one of the key locations!

On the day, you’ll have the rare chance to hand-release rainbow and brown trout into the dam, learn about freshwater fishing, and enjoy a relaxing day outdoors under the karri trees.

💡 What to Expect

  • 🎣 Hand-release of live trout into Big Brook Dam (kids love it!)

  • 🧠 Talks & tips on freshwater fishing, gear and trout handling

  • 🐟 Meet the hatchery team who raise these magnificent fish

  • 🧺 Picnic & BBQ areas – bring your lunch or enjoy local treats

  • 🎨 Kids’ activities and nature-based fun

  • 🚶‍♀️ Lakeside walk trails and plenty of spots to cast a line

  • 🅿️ Free parking at Big Brook Dam picnic area

🎯 Why It Matters

The trout released at Troutfest are part of a wider stocking program that helps support:

  • Freshwater fishing tourism in WA’s South-West

  • Nearly 10,000 licensed freshwater anglers

  • Local economies through fishing, accommodation and gear hire

  • Family bonding, mental health, and connection with nature

As Recfishwest CEO Dr Andrew Rowland says:

“This fishery generates around $20 million a year for regional communities. It’s a perfect example of how great fishing experiences deliver social value and economic benefits.”

✅ No Licence Needed for Kids!

Children under 16 do not need a freshwater fishing licence, making this the perfect day for families to try something new in a safe, welcoming environment.
