Southern Forest Arts: where nature, creativity and community come together
The Southern Forests region of Western Australia is known for its towering karri forests, cool-climate produce, and strong sense of community—but it’s also home to a growing and vibrant creative scene. At the heart of this is Southern Forest Arts, a regional arts organisation based in Northcliffe, supporting creativity, cultural expression, and community connection across Manjimup, Pemberton, Northcliffe and Walpole.
Southern Forest Arts plays an important role in nurturing local artists and bringing art into everyday life. Through exhibitions, workshops, public art projects and community programs, it provides opportunities for local creatives while also attracting visiting artists who are inspired by the landscapes and stories of the Southern Forests.
One of its most iconic achievements is the Understory Art & Nature Trail—a truly unique experience that has become a must-visit for anyone travelling through the region.
The Understory Art & Nature Trail
Winding through native karri forest near Northcliffe, the Understory Art & Nature Trail is a 1.2–1.5 km immersive walk that blends art, nature and storytelling in a way that feels both grounded and unexpected. Along the trail, visitors discover sculptures, installations, poetry and sound works created by local, national and international artists.
Rather than being confined to a gallery, the artworks are woven directly into the forest itself. Trees become part of the storytelling, the landscape becomes the canvas, and the experience shifts with every step. It’s a space where visitors are invited to slow down, reflect, and connect more deeply with both place and creativity.
The Understory is widely recognised as one of Australia’s leading examples of “art in nature,” and it has helped place the Southern Forests region on the cultural tourism map—not just for its natural beauty, but for its creative identity as well.
More than art: supporting a living community
What makes Southern Forest Arts especially meaningful is the impact it has beyond the trail and galleries. It is deeply connected to the local community, working with artists, schools, volunteers and regional groups to develop creative opportunities that are inclusive and accessible.
Programs and partnerships help support:
- Local artists and makers
- Youth and education initiatives
- Community exhibitions and workshops
- Collaborative public art projects
By engaging with Southern Forest Arts, visitors are not just experiencing art—they are contributing to a living creative ecosystem that supports people who call the Southern Forests home.
Why your visit matters
Experiencing the Understory and engaging with Southern Forest Arts helps sustain the region’s cultural heartbeat. Visitor support contributes directly to community arts programs, local employment, and the ongoing development of creative projects that reflect the identity of the region.
It also helps ensure that art remains connected to place—rooted in the forests, stories, and people of the Southern Forests.
For many visitors, the experience becomes more than just a walk in the forest. It becomes a moment of connection: to nature, to creativity, and to a community that continues to shape and share its story through art.
