Pemberton and the Munda Biddi Trail
“Did you know The Pemberton to Nortcliffe section is often rated one of the best sections“
The Munda Biddi Trail is a world‑class, over 1,000 km long off‑road cycling trail running from Mundaring (near Perth) to Albany through the forests, rivers, and coastlines of South‑West Western Australia. It’s one of the longest continuous off‑road cycling trails on Earth and a signature experience of Noongar Boodja.
The name Munda Biddi means “path through the forest” in the Noongar language. The trail follows a largely undeveloped natural corridor, weaving through jarrah and karri forests, river valleys, wildflower country, and stretches of the Southern Ocean.
Difficulty: Varies by section; generally Grade 4 (moderate to hard) with both gentle and technical terrain.
It is designed primarily for cycling and bikepacking, using:
- purpose‑built singletrack
- old forestry roads
- disused railway formations
- some unsealed and sealed public roads
Campsites & Facilities
The trail includes 12 purpose‑built overnight shelters, most accessible only by bike and spaced to support multi‑day journeys. They include:
- sleeping platforms
- water tanks
- bike racks
- toilets
Some sections require these shelters because towns can be more than a day’s ride apart.
Best Time to Ride
While open year‑round, the safest and most enjoyable seasons are:
- Spring (Sept–Nov) — wildflowers, mild weather
- Autumn (Mar–May) — stable temperatures
- Avoid Dec–Mar due to extreme heat and fire danger
Towns Along the Trail
The route passes through many South‑West towns, including:
- Jarrahdale
- Dwellingup
- Collie
- Nannup
- Donnelly River Village
- Manjimup
- Pemberton
- Northcliffe
- Walpole
- Denmark
Planning Your Ride
The Munda Biddi Trail Foundation provides maps, planning tools, events, and volunteer programs. They help maintain the trail in partnership with Parks and Wildlife. It’s also worth supporting the visitor centres along the trail, which carry the official Munda Biddi maps, Pack Meals and offer valuable local knowledge for riders.
