The Pemberton Classic
The Pemberton Classic takes part over the Labour Day long weekend in March and is proudly sponsored by the Pemberton Community Resource Centre and the Shire of Manjimup, and is sanctioned by Cycling WA
The Pemberton Classic has been running in Pemberton for 10 years. The original event concept was initiated by establishing a “fundraiser Bike-a-thon” for different good causes. The event has now grown to become one of the most highly regarded cycling events on the WA Cycling calendar.
In 2003 the Pemberton Community Resource Centre took over the management and coordination of this event with a view to increasing promotion and participation in the event. The level of participation has grown each year with the Pemberton Classic Winning the award of “Best Cycling Event for WA in 2006”.
Over the past five years, the event has received significant financial support from Healthway, SWDC, the Shire of Manjimup and the local community. The attractive prize pool of over $10,000, attracts World Class and WA Institute of Sport cyclists through to Novice riders from WA, interstate, and overseas. The timing of the event and the challenging circuits makes it ideal preparation for the elite riders prior to other national and international events. In 2011, the number of participants was around 200.
The event showcases Pemberton and the surrounding area as a tourist destination. It also promotes cycling as an ideal form of exercise and encourages local community members and visitors to actively participate in outdoor exercise and experience the significant health and social benefits of cycling.
